LEADER: LUCIANO

In 2016, local favela resident Luciano Da Silva Faustino decided to take his passion for creative cocktails and cold beer to the next level by producing it himself in his small favela apartment kitchen with the most basic of tools and equipment. In an attempt to transform the underdeveloped palate and craft beer awareness of the community, Luciano began making his own brew in his spare time away from his day job at a nearby cafe and sandwich shop.

Over the course of the last two years, he has been perfecting his technique and passion for artisanal beer and now has an artisanal beer club (a group of beer lovers) here in the favela waiting for his next greatest concoction.

Luciano has never formally sold any of his beer nor had he thought of dedicating itself to this business (for lack of knowledge in business and lack of investment) until the opportunity arose to be part of the inaugural class of local entrepreneurs to be incubated by Favela Inc. and thus be part of a community-based tour circuit led by Favela Experience in partnership with various international travel organizations.

This project was in its nascent stages when Favela Inc. began its incubation; Luciano, the founder, was only selling his craft beer to friends and family, while dreaming of operating a brew-pub and expanding beyond the favela. Favela Inc. connected Luciano to opportunities to sell to tourists, and over the course of incubation he increased his production from 20L to 100L per month.

Favela Inc. helped Luciano organize his ideas and ambitions and begin to think like an entrepreneur. We helped him produce financial budgets for the third-party production, develop sales plans, find partnerships with bars, calculate the financing required, and develop soft skills. Luciano is now equipped to turn his project into a formal business, hire employees, and establish a brew-pub, once the necessary funding is secured.
