LEADER: MESSIAS

Vidigal Capoeira, a capoeira program for children that teaches them the significance of discipline and teamwork, as well as the history of Afro-Brazilian culture. Messias, a capoeira master and the project’s founder, hoped to build a sustainable non-profit organization in Vidigal and take the same model to other favelas in the future.

Favela Inc. worked with Messias to register his project as an NGO, professionalize his operation, develop the program’s physical space (including securing a $1,500 donation for improvements), design its digital marketing strategy, and create promotional content. Over 90 children have now benefited from the project.

We’ve also worked with Messias to create a plan to generate sustainable revenue to support the project and its expansion, through responsible commercialization of aspects of an annual national-level capoeira convention that Messias organizes. This will have the additional benefit of sustaining the convention, which is currently supported by donations only.
